Biography

When badminton was first held at the Olympic Games at Barcelona in 1992, Germany nominated four players to participate. Katrin Schmidt partnered Kerstin Ubben in the women’s doubles and the pair were eliminated in their second-round match. The same happened four years later at Atlanta. Schmidt also participated in the women’s singles at Barcelona, and was also eliminated in her second-round match.

Schmidt won 16 German Championships in all events mixed, doubles, and singles. She was a bronze medallist at the 1988 European Championships with the non-Olympian Kirsten Schmieder, and in 1996 with Ubben. Schmidt also won several international competitions such as the Swiss Open with the non-Olympian Heidi Krickhaus. She also won the Bitburger Open several times, the Irish Open in 1990 with Ubben, the French Open with her in 1991, and the Swiss Open in 1992. In 1994, she and Ubben won the Scottish Open.
