Biography

Luigi “Ti-Rouge” Bartesaghi was born in Italy and came to Canada in 1951, settling in Montréal. A member of Union Sports Italian Club, he finished in first place at the 1960 Olympic cycling trials in Toronto, ahead of fellow countryman Alessandro Messina of Toronto. Both thus won the right to represent Canada at the Olympics held in their birth country at Roma, the sole cycling representatives for Canada, competing in the road race. Bartesaghi returned to Italy shortly thereafter after a decade of living in Canada, but visited Québec again briefly in 1965 as the sporting director of the Italian team that competed at the Tour du St-Laurent. He also competed as an amateur in Italy alongside his brother Giuseppe “Peppino” Bartesaghi, who later became a well-known musician.
