Biography

Marino Morettini was an Italian cyclist who joined Pedale Sportivo Trevigliese in 1948, while in 1951 he moved to Velo Club Varese. At age 20 he was selected for the 1951 World Championships in Milano, where he finished third in the match sprint, and he was runner-up the following year in Paris.

At the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, Morettini won silver in the kilometre time trial and was part of the gold medal winning quartet in team pursuit. In 1953 in Zürich he became amateur world champion in the match sprint, beating his compatriot Cesare Pinarello in the final. He struggled in subsequent years and retired in 1961 after a 15-year career. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Italian Olympic Committee for his cycling achievements.

Settling permanently in Spino d’Adda in 1966, Morettini opened a restaurant in a wing of the Zineroni Casati Castle, which from the beginning became a sports meeting place. In 2000, in the presence of family members, the square in front of the municipal sports center was named for him.
