Biography

The son of General Daunt, the recipient of the Victoria Cross for bravery whilst serving in India in 1857, his stepfather, who married John Daunt’s widowed mother in 1889, was Colonel Thomas Rochfort, who came from a family of wealthy landowners in Ireland. His father Horace Rochfort founded the Carlow Cricket and Rugby Clubs and also the All-Ireland Polo Club, the oldest polo club in Europe. John Daunt’s sporting notoriety seems to be his fifth placing in the 1900 Paris Olympics with a 36-hole total of 184.

Although he appears to have been a British national in 1900, perhaps even British India, Daunt entered the 1900 Olympic golf event playing out of the Paris Golf Club.
