Biography

James Bergeson played water polo at Newport Harbor High and then Stanford University, where he was a two-time All-America. He led the Cardinal to NCAA titles in 1981 and 1982, and a runner-up finish in 1983. Bergeson was a four-time All-American at Stanford. In 2014 he was named to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) All-Century team in water polo.

In addition to his 1988 Olympic appearance, Bergeson won a gold medal at the 1987 Pan American Games. He competed for the US at the 1982 and 1986 World Championships, and was on the World Cup team in 1985 and 1987. Bergeson later founded and owned a rental equipment business for both private and commercial usage.
