Biography

Mauro Barella was an Italian pole vaulter who first cleared 5 metres in 1976. He was a three-time Italian champion, winning in 1982 and 1984-85, and twice won the indoor national title, in 1982 and 1984. He also won a bronze medal at the 1983 Mediterranean Games. Barella set two Italian records within five days in July 1984, clearing 5.49 on 6 July to break the 12-year-old Italian record of Renato Dionisi, and then on 11 July, he set what would be his career best with 5.50 to win the Italian title. Originally not chosen for the 1984 Italian Olympic team, these efforts led to his inclusion for the Los Angeles Games, where he placed eighth. Barella earned 35 international caps from 1978-86.

Personal Best: PV – 5.50 (1984).
