Biography

Giuseppe Buttari began his athletic activity in 1967, coached by Alessandro Piccinini, and in the first years of the 1970s established himself as Italy’s No. 1 high hurdler. His most successful performance was a bronze medal at the 1978 Milano European Indoor tournament in the 60 metre hurdles, and he was also fifth (13.85) in the 1974 Outdoor Europeans in Roma in a final won by the future Olympic champion Guy Drut.

Buttari attended two editions of the Olympics. In 1972 he was disqualified in his heat, while four years later in Montréal he was eliminated in the semifinal. At the 1979 Mediterranean Games, he won a silver medal behind Borislav Pisić of Yugoslavia in the 110 metre hurdles. For three seasons at the end of 1970s, he was among the best 25 in the World Top List for this event. Between 1971-1980, he earned 39 international caps.

Domestically Buttari took ten Italian titles: six in the 110 metre hurdles (1972, 1974-1976, and 1978-79) and four in the 60 metres hurdles indoor (1973, 1975, 1978, and 1980).

Personal Best: 110H – 13.70 (1979).
