Biography

Wolfango Montanari was an Italian sprinter of the 1950s and one of the most important sportsmen in the city of Terni and the all-Umbria region. Montanari competed at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and won two gold medals in the 4x100 relay at the 1951 and 1955 Mediterranean Games, adding three bronze medals in the 100 and 200 in 1951 and the 4x100 in 1955. He was a member of the Italian national team from 1951-57, during which time he was capped 14 times. Domestically, Montanari placed second at the 1951 Italian Championships in Milano in the 100m behind Franco Leccese and twice won the 200 metre title (1951, 1954), both in times of 21.7.

Alongside men such as Lamberto Benvenuti and Massimo Carignani, Montanari promoted sports activity in Terni among young people, contributing to the growth of many leading athletes, as a technical director of Ceffas, and as an honorary member of the Panathlon Club.

Personal best: 100 – 10.7 (1954); 200 – 21.5 (1953).
