Biography

Franco Sar was Italy’s best decathlete, in his era, competing at the 1960 and 1964 Olympics. At the European Championships he was 13th in 1962 and 12th in 1966. He was Italian champion in the pole vault in 1973 and the decathlon from 1958-65. Sar set national records at pole vault with 4.45 in 1964 and nine times in the decathlon from 6,110 in 1959 to 7,368 in 1965. He competed in 15 internationals from 1959-66 in the 110 hurdles, pole vault, discus throw, and decathlon. He was later a coach, official, and meet organizer for many years and chairman of strong Italian athletic clubs, such as Snia Milano.
