Biography

Anatoly Mikhaylov was the leading Soviet high hurdler in the late 1950s and early 1960s. During his career, Mikhaylov won Olympic bronze in 1964, was the 1962 European Champion, and won bronze at the 1958 European Championships. He also competed at the 1956 and 1960 Olympics, failing to reach either final, and at the 1966 European Championships, where he was fourth. Mikhaylov won gold at the 1961 Summer Universiade with the Soviet 4x100 relay team and won high hurdles silver at the 1963 Universiade.

Mikhaylov was a Soviet Champion 13 times – 110 hurdles in 1957-66; 200 hurdles in 1960-61; and 4x100 relay in 1961. Mikhaylov graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Motion-Picture Engineers (now St. Petersburg State University of Film and Television) in 1965 and after 1966 worked as a design engineer with Leningrad Optical Mechanical Association (LOMO), the leading Soviet manufacturer of advanced optical instruments, medical equipment and cameras. He was also a sports instructor at the LOMO’s sports club and coached young children at a local sports school in St. Petersburg.
