Biography

After competing at the 1952 Winter Olympics, Jannette Burr competed at the 1954 World Championships, winning a bronze medal in the giant slalom. That was her best year, placing second in combined at Arlberg-Kandahar and at the Garmisch Classic. She also won US Championships in downhill in 1948 and 1950 and added the 1950 North American downhill title. Her other victories included the Pacific Northwest Ski Association Combined, the Daffodil Cup, the Heather Cup, the Golden Poles, Northwest Intercollegiate, the Penguin Giant Slalom in 1948, the Sir Arnold Lunn Race, Sun Valley Ski Club Championships and the Heather Cup in 1949

Burr started out as a water skier, competing in that sport in the 1940s. A native of Sun Valley, Idaho, Burr served as the ski double for Lucille Ball in the movie “Lucy Goes to Sun Valley.” She attended the University of Washington, graduating with a degree in physical education. Burr was inducted into the US Skiing Hall of Fame in 1970.

In 1955 Burr was awarded the Diamond Harriman Pin, an honor previously only given to US Olympian Gretchen Fraser. In 1970 Burr was inducted into the National Ski Hall of Fame and Sun Valley gave her a lifetime free pass. During the 1960s, she worked as a ski instructor in Sun Valley and gave ski lessons to several members of the Rockefeller and Kennedy families.
