Biography

Middle-distance runner Nils Schumann surprisingly won the 800 metres event at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. In 1998, he won the European Championships and the European Indoor title. In 2000, he added a silver medal at the Europeans and in 2002, a bronze at the European Championships outdoors.

Domestically, Schumann won the 800 metres national title in 1999 and 2000, and also the 3x1,000 metres titles in both years. At German Indoor Championships he added the 800 metres titles in 1998 and 2000, and also the 3x1,000 metres relay in 2000.

Schumann was elected Germany’s Track & Field Athlete of the Year in 1998 and Germany’s Sportsman of the Year in 2000. He was also awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Since 2009, he held motivation and relaxation courses as a personal trainer with his own agency “Prana-Sports GmbH” in Erfurt.
