Irina Vorobyeva was a pairs skater who competed at the 1976 Innsbruck Winter Olympics and also appeared at seven World Championships from 1974-82, winning gold in 1981, silver in 1977, and bronze in 1976. Vorobyova competed five times at the European Championships, winning gold in 1981 with Aleksandr Vlasov, adding silvers in 1977 and 1979 and a bronze in 1976 with Vlasov, and winning another bronze in 1982 with Igor Lisovsky.
During her sports career, Vorobyova sustained 11 concussions, and multiple injuries to her left knee. After the collapse of the USSR, she left to work as a coach at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in the United States. The trauma to her left knee joint left her disabled, and she could not find effective treatment in Russia or the USA.
