Nordic Combined at the 2002 Winter Olympics

Dates 9 – 22 February 2002
Medal Events 3

The 2002 Nordic combined cross-country events were conducted in Soldier Hollow, a specially constructed Nordic ski center in Wasatch Mountain State Park, in Wasatch County, near Heber, Utah, a little southeast of Salt Lake City. The jumping portion of Nordic combined was held at Utah Olympic Park, north of Park City and east of Salt Lake City, which was also specifically constructed for the Winter Olympics, although it was built in the early 1990s, preparing for the bid for the 1998 Olympic Winter Games, which went to Nagano. A third event was added to the Nordic combined program with the addition of a sprint event. The regular individual event consists of two jumps on the normal hill, followed by a 15 km cross-country race. The sprint event consists of a single jump on the large hill, followed by a 7.5 km cross-country race. The team event was unchanged, still consisting of two jumps on the normal hill, followed by a 4 x 5 km relay. Finland’s Samppa Lajunen won three gold medals, winning both individual events, and anchoring the Finnish relay team.
