Description

The National Olympic Committee of Ceylon was formed on 8 April 1937 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in the same year. Sri Lanka has competed at all Olympic Games since its independence in 1948, except for the 1976 Games. Through 1968, it competed under the name of Ceylon, but that name was formally changed to Sri Lanka on 22 May 1972. Sri Lanka has yet to compete at the Olympic Winter Games.

The first Ceylonese national to compete at the Olympics was Carl Van Geyzel, who competed for Great Britain in the 1928 high jump. In 1948, Duncan White won a silver medal in the 400 metre hurdles in track & field athletics for Ceylon. The other medal for this nation was a silver in the women’s 200 metres in 2000 by Susanthika Jayasinghe. She originally received a bronze medal, but it was upgraded to a silver medal after the delayed disqualification of Marion Jones.
