Bobsleigh at the 2002 Winter Olympics

Dates 16 – 23 February 2002
Medal Events 3

The bobsleigh events of the 2002 Winter Olympics were held at the Utah Olympic Park bobsleigh/luge/skeleton track at Park City, Utah which is fifteen miles east of Salt Lake City. Construction of the $25,000,000 track began in 1994, before Salt Lake City was announced as the host city for the 2002 Games, and was completed in December 1996. It was officially opened in January 1997 and regularly hosted World Cup events in the four seasons before the 2002 Olympics. The track measured 1335 m with 14 curves at an average gradient of 7.8% and a drop of 103.5 m from start to finish.

For the first time since 1932 the Olympic programme was expanded and a two-woman event introduced into the schedule. This came seven years after the first FIBT Women’s World Cup race and followed the establishment of a world championship in 2000. Three countries dominated the 2002 Olympics, Germany, Switzerland and the USA. No other country finished higher than fifth in any event.
