Biography

Gyula Andrási kayaked for Elektromos from 1942 to 1949 and then transferred to the Budapesti Honvéd. He achieved his first significant result in 1946, when with István Granek he took third place in the 1000m kayak two-person competition. In the following year, with a new partner Kálmán Blahó, he won the championship gold medal. Competing with Granek again in 1949 and 1950, he won two more championships in this event. With the fours Andrási won two more championship gold medals in 1947 and 1950. At the 1948 London Olympics he competed with János Urányi in the 10,000m kayak two-person race, finishing in fifth place.

In 1950, with rowing competitor József Simó, he suffered a fatal sailing accident on Lake Balaton under unclear circumstances. In 1951-1952 a Gyula Andrási memorial competition was organized in his honor.
