Biography

Aldo Buttini created sculptures, bas reliefs, busts and monuments. He became known as an appreciated sculptor, and obtained important private and official commissions. He performed many works for Italian and foreign clients (twelve colossal statues Pittsburgh), and participated in major exhibitions and national exhibitions such as the Venezio Biennale, the exhibition of the portrait in Florence, the art show sacred of Bergamo and the first exhibition of marble in Carrara. Eight statues of the Stadio dei Marmi were made by Buttini from 1932 on. The son of an antique dealer, Buttini served as a mountain trooper in World War I. He briefly attended the Carrara Art Academy, but soon opened his own studio. From 1931 he worked as a marble sculptor for his father-in-law. In addition to his own works, Buttini also carried out designs by others.

From 1955, Buttini taught sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara. During this time, he created a reproduction of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper made of multicolored marble for the USA. He did not, however, live to implement a monumental statue of Christ for Cuba. Peso Massimo (Heavyweight) may have been one of his statues from the Foro Italico. Here, his two statues of pugilists, Boxer with bare hands and Boxer toweling himself, are the most likely candidates.
