Colombian footballer Leidy Asprilla had a promising start to her career, representing both the under-17 and under-20 national sides. In 2013 Asprilla scored a goal against Brazil in the South American Under-17 Championship in Paraguay. One year later she represented Colombia at the 2014 FIFA under-17 Women’s World Cup. She eventually earned a place in the Olympic team for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games but did not play in any matches. The same year she suffered a knee injury that kept her out of the national side for some time, before later returning to the under-20 squad.
In May 2019 Asprilla was reported missing whilst on her way to a training session. After not being found for several days, initial reports suggested that she had been kidnapped, or even murdered. Eventually her body was discovered in a ditch next to her motorcycle off the side of a main highway. An autopsy concluded that Asprilla had been in a road accident with another vehicle. She was only 22-years-old.
