Biography

Count Clément van der Straeten played polo in Argentina, England and his home country, Belgium, for whom he played in both their matches at the 1920 Olympic Games. Sadly, the hosts finished fourth, and last. In England van der Straeten played for the famous Pilgrim’s team, run by his fellow Belgian Olympian Alfred Grisar but it was with the Wrens that he came closest to winning his only major honour in the sport in 1923 when they lost 10-3 to the 14th/20th Hussars in the final of the Junior Cup at the Antwerp Tournament. Van der Straeten played at number one and Grisar was also in the team, playing at number three,
