Biography

After a lengthy career as a footballer Ellert Schram turned to politics and was elected as a member of parliament for Reykjavík. From 1957 to 1971 Schram played in the top league of Icelandic football with Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur, scoring 62 goals for the team. With the club he won the five league titles (1959, 1961, 1963, 1965, 1968) and seven Icelandic Cups (1960–64, 1966–77). In July 1959 he made his international début for Iceland in a 1–0 victory against Norway. Schram played in 23 matches for his country during his career and scored six goals. Following his retirement as a player he spent the 1973 season as the manager of his former club.

From 1973 to 1989 Schram served as the chair of the Football Association of Iceland. Alongside his sporting administration role he was also elected to the Icelandic parliament for the Independence Party, first serving from 1971 to 1979, followed by a second stint from 1983 until 1987. He later served a third spell in parliament, this time with the Social Democratic Alliance from 2007 to 2009. In 1997 Schram was elected as the President of the National Olympic Committee of Iceland, staying in the post until 2006.
