Anthony Liu was involved in numerous sports in his youth, and played American football in California for a short time, but he was most successful as a judoka. Representing his native American Samoa, he made his major international début at the 2011 World Championships, where he was eliminated in the first round of the +100 kg competition. He was fourth at the Oceania Championships in 2012, but received an invitation to represent his country in the half-heavyweight category of the London Olympics that year. There, he lost his round one bout against Latvian Jevgēņijs Borodavko and was eliminated. After his appearance, he coached judo, but died suddenly in his sleep in 2022, at the age of only 34.
