Stathelakos was born in the Greek city of Lamia and represented his country of birth at the World Junior Championships in Athletics in Beijing in 2006, followed by two editions of the European U23 Championships (2007, 2009). From 2009 onwards he began competing for Cyprus where he participated at his first European Championships in 2012. His performance earned him a place on the Cypriot team for the 2012 London Olympics where he finished 30th with a best throw of 69.65 metres. Stathelakos then had some high-profile top-ten results with seventh at the 2013 Mediterranean Games and seventh at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
