Biography

Carlo Sganzini was a Swiss lawyer, politician, Alpinist, and President of the Union Internationale des Associations d’Alpinisme (UIAA) from 1984 to 1990. Sganzini grew up in Bern and studied law at the University in that city. In 1954 he founded what later became the law firm Sganzini, Bernasconi, Peter & Gaggini in Lugano. In 1960 he began his political career as a member of the Lugano City Parliament, of which he was a member until 1984.

From 1970-84 Sganzini was vice-president of the Free Democratic Party (Partito Liberale Radicale PLR), which he represented from 1969-87 in the Ticino Canton Council (Gran Consiglio). He was a member of the Berne section of the SAC (Schweizer Alpen-Club) and belonged to the second generation of the Swiss Academic Ski Club (SAS). From 1980-83 he was SAC central president when the Ticino section of the SAC took over the central committee and later became an honorary member of the Ticino section. From 1984 to 1990 he was President of the UIAA and in 2001 he was elected an Honorary Member.
