Puerto Rican equestrian rider Juan Rieckehoff first started riding horses when he was five, with his father Germán being a key figure in promoting the horse industry in the country. In 1974 Rieckehoff was a senior at the University of Richmond in Virginia when he won the Volco Trophy at the National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden, New York City. Two years later he represented Puerto Rico at the 1976 Montréal Olympics where he finished 20th in the individual competition.
