Biography

Álvaro Sabbo had a lifelong career in the military that began when he was a student at Colégio Militar Lisboa. Graduating from that school in 1944, he completed military officer training in 1947. During his time in the service, he represented Portugal at two editions of the Olympic equestrian eventing tournament. In 1956, he failed to finish the course and thus the Portuguese squad, which included Fernando Cavaleiro and Joaquim Silva, failed to place in the team event. In 1960, he was disqualified from the individual event while neither Silva nor Jorge Mathias finished either, leaving Mário Delgado as the only Portuguese competitor whose score would have contributed to the team tournament. Sabbo eventually retired from the military with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
