In his early career French cyclist Régis Ovion won the Tour de la Guadeloupe in 1970, followed by the overall classification at the Tour de l’Avenir one year later. He also won the amateur road race at the UCI Road World Championships in Mendrisio, Switzerland in 1971. His performances earned him a place on the Olympic team, where he finished 15th in the road race at the München Games, only 36 seconds behind the winner. After the Olympics he turned professional, eventually winning the French national road race title in 1975. Ovion focused on the Tour de France, riding eight editions of the race from 1973 to 1981 and finishing 10th on his début.
