Biography

Zinaida Stagurskaya was 2000 World Champion in the road race, in addition to her three Olympic appearances. She also won the 2000 Giro della Toscana Feminin, and the 2001 women’s Giro del Trentino Adige-Südtirol. She first came to international notice in 1994 when she won the Tour Féminin de Krasna Lipa in the Czech Republic. Her other major podium finishes were second places at the 2001 Tour de Snowy (AUS) and the 2004 Giro del Trentino, and thirds at the 2002 Giro del Trentino, and the 2001-2002 Emakumeen Bira in Spain. She was killed while training on the Vitebsk-Gomel road, when she was struck by a car driving at over 140 km/hr on the wrong side of the road, and she died at the scene. She had lived in Italy later in her career, after marrying an Italian man.
