Sally Zack

Sally Zack was a road racer who competed in that event at the 1988 and 1992 Olympics, finishing 16th in 1988 and 10th in 1992. Growing up in the White Mountains of New Hampshire she started out as a runner and ski racer, and then ran track and cross-country at Southern Illinois University. Injuries hampered her progress, so she started cycling as a way to cross-train, only to find she had a talent for it. She started competing in cycling only the year after she left college.

Zack was US National Champion in the road race in 1987 and 1988. She competed for the US at the 1991 World Championships, finishing fourth in the road race. At the 1991 Ore-Ida Women’s Challenge, she won four stages, but did not make the podium on GC. She again raced at the 1993 World Championships, placing fifth in the road race. Zack was on the podium in a major stage race when she finished third at the 1989 Grande Boucle Féminine Internationale, the women’s version of the Tour de France.

After leaving cycling in 1993, Zack returned to ski racing, in cross-country, probably spurred into that by her husband, former Norwegian Olympic cross-country skier Audun Endestad. They later settled in Fairbanks, Alaska where they ran Alaska Heartland Adventures, serving as guides for people doing hiking, back-country skiing, and hunting, and also running ski camps and ultra-ski races. Zack-Endestad also began teaching and coaching skiing at the University of Alaska and for the Fairbanks Nordic Ski Club.
