Biography

Belgian cyclist André Bar began his career as an amateur in the mid-1950s and had success on both the road and the track. Bar won back-to-back national titles in the pursuit in 1955 and 1956, before finishing second in the event in 1957. During this time he also had similar results on the road, winning the Romsée-Stavelot-Romsée race in 1956 and 1957, and winning a stage of the 1957 edition of the Flèche du Sud in Luxembourg. In 1956 he was selected to compete in the team pursuit on the velodrome at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics where the Belgian team reached the quarter-finals. After winning the Tour du Maroc in 1959 Bar then competed as a professional rider, having the biggest win of his career with victory at the 1962 Tour de l’Oise stage race in northern France.
