Thomas Barth

Thomas Barth was an East German road cyclist who finished an unfortunate fourth in the individual road race at the 1980 Moskva Olympics. In 1977 and 1978 he was Youth World Champion with the East German road time trial team. From 1980-89 he participated in the Peace Race, finishing fourth in 1982 as his best result. At the 1983 Worlds he again placed fourth. One year earlier the East German road time trial team won the first of six World Championships (1982-83, 1986-89) and was elected Team of the Year in the former GDR.

Barth won the following major road races: the 1982 Mediterranean Tour at Turkey, the 1985 Romanian Cup and Greece Tour, the 1986 Tour of Rhineland Palatine, the 1988 Tour Around the Mountain Coal, and the 1989 Tour de Belgique. After re-unification, Barth turned professional and rode with the Danish-Dutch team TVM at the 1991 and 1992 Tour de France. He later was director of the Peace Race until 2006 and worked as a distribution agent with a German and Taiwanese cycling goods company.
