Biography

Frank Connell grew up in New Jersey where he lived in Ridgewood for many years. He competed for the US at the 1932 Olympics in the road race. He competed for the Century Road Club of America. When he was only 15-years-old, Connell won the 1925 New Jersey Amateur Bicycle League of America (ABLA) road championship and he was third that year at the ABLA nationals in St. Louis. In 1930 he set 10 unpaced ABLA records, from 2 to 20 miles. After the 1932 Olympics he set 10 motorpaced records at the Coney Island velodrome, and the turned professional. He started as a pro with two victories but a bad crash caused injuries that ended his career. Connell operated a gas station in Secaucus, New Jersey until 1996, when he settled in Columbia, South Carolina where, until his death, he lived with his nephew. Connell was inducted into the US Bicycling Hall of Fame.
