As a young cyclist Yvan Covent finished fourth in the youth road race at the Belgian national championships in 1958. Over the next couple of years Covent had some success as an amateur, finishing on the podium in multiple races in East Flanders and eventually earning himself a place on the Olympic team. At the 1960 Roma Games he was part of the Belgian quartet that finished 18th in the 100 kilometres team time trial. Covent turned professional after the Olympics, winning a few more one-day races before retiring in the mid-1960s.
