In 1972 Colombian cyclist Fernando Cruz competed in the road race at the München Olympics, finishing 26th in the main peloton of riders who were only 36 seconds behind the winner. Cruz also rode in the team time trial at the Games, placing 22nd with his compatriots. Throughout the 1970s he rode in multiple editions of the Vuelta a Colombia, winning the points classification in 1970.
