Biography

Gustaaf De Smet rode on both the road and track at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. In amateur events, he won Omloop Het Volk in 1954 and in 1956 won Gent-Wevelgem and the U-23 Ronde de Vlaanderen. De Smet turned professional after the Olympics and rode mostly for Groene Leeuw, competing in the pro peloton through 1968.

A top sprinter, De Smet won multiple smaller races but never factored in Grand Tours. His biggest professional victory came in 1965 when he won Quatre Jours de Dunkerque. He was also East Flemish Champion in 1964 and in 1966 won Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne.
