Ludo Delcroix

Cyclist Ludo Delcroix began his amateur career with a string of wins in his native Belgium, earning himself a place on the Olympic team for the 1972 München Games. Delcroix was part of the quartet that rode in the controversial team time trial in München. The Netherlands initially finished third, with Belgium in fourth, but the Dutch rider Aad van den Hoek failed a doping test with the team being disqualified. The Belgian team, however, had not been subjected to doping controls, resulting in no bronze medal being awarded.

In 1973 Delcroix turned professional, often riding as a domestique for his teammate and fellow Belgian Eddy Merckx. From 1973 to 1981 Delcroix rode in eight editions of the Tour de France and three editions of the Giro d’Italia. Although he was never in contention for the overall classification in either race, he did win stage nine of the Tour in 1979 on a flat stage finish in Roubaix.
