Despite being offered several professional contracts, French cyclist Marcel Duchemin remained an amateur throughout his career, racking up multiple victories during the 1960s and 1970s. After winning a time trial stage at the Tour of Bulgaria in 1965, Duchemin then won the Tour d’Anjou back in France the following year. In 1970 he won the Tour de l’Avenir, along with a stage of the Peace Race in Poland, also being named the best French cyclist of the year. Over in England he won a stage of the Milk Race and the overall mountains classification title in 1971, followed by another stage win one year later. Duchemin also rode in the road race at the München Olympics in 1972, where he finished in the main peloton of riders, two-and-half minutes behind the winner.
