Biography

In the late 1950s and early 1960s Hirotsugu Fukuhara cycled about 25 kilometres from home to school each day before taking up cycling seriously during high school. Fukuhara then competed at inter-high school championships before enrolling at Nihon University. In 1962 he rode at the National Sports Festival in Okayama, with him later being selected to represent the Japanese national team. Two years later he competed at his home Olympics in Tokyo, finishing 19th in the 100 kilometres team time trial with his compatriots. One year later Fukuhara also competed in the team time trial at the Road Cycling World Championships. After his competitive career he worked as a coach and served as the manager of the national cycling team.
