With more than 20 national titles to his name Harry Hannus was the best Finnish road and track cyclist of his day. Hannus won his first title in 1967 with victory in the national junior time trial, before winning his first senior title four years later when he became the Finnish time trial champion. He dominated the road race and time trial at the national championships, doing the double on six occasions (1972–74, 1978–79, 1982), in addition to winning the time trial title three more times (1975–76, 1981) and the road race title in 1984. Hannus had similar success on the track, winning five individual pursuit titles (1972, 1975–78) and three team pursuit titles (1976, 1978, 1982).
Hannus competed in multiple races during his career, including winning a stage of the Milk Race in England in 1969, riding stage races in Sweden and Germany, and having six starts in the Peace Race. He was a mainstay at the UCI Road World Championships, competing at ten editions, with a best result of fourth in the road race in 1977. At the Porvoon ajot one-day race, the oldest in Finland, he won eight consecutive titles from 1972 to 1978, followed by two more wins in 1980 and 1983.
From 1972 to 1984 Hannus represented Finland and four consecutive Olympic Games, riding in the road race at all four Games. His best performances came at the 1980 Moskva Games, finishing 12th in the road race and seventh in the team time trial with his compatriots. In 1974 Hannus also set the Finnish hour record which stood until 2015.
