Biography

In addition to his Olympic gold medal in team pursuit, Günter Haritz was on the winning West German pursuit team at the 1970 and 1973 World Championships. Haritz turned professional later in 1973, and had a solid career, racing through 1982, mostly shining in six-day races. His greatest years were 1975, when he won five six-day events throughout Europe, and 1976, when he won another six. During his career he stood on the podium 30 times in six-day races. As a pro he also won the 1974 West German road title, the 1975 European title in the motor-paced event, and the 1976 European title on the track in the Madison. He raced the Giro d’Italia in 1974 and the Tour de Suisse five times (1974-77, 1979), but was mostly a domestique in the professional peloton. Haritz later owned a bicycle shop in Leimen. He also wrote several textbook about cycling and cycling tours.
