Danilo Hondo

Cyclist Danilo Hondo was a member of the German 4,000 metre pursuit team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics that finished a disappointing ninth. His greatest moment was in 1994 when he won the World Championships in the team pursuit with Guido Fulst, Jens Lehmann and non-Olympian Andreas Bach. In 2002, Hondo won the national title in the road race.

Hondo rode with Agro-Adler Brandenburg and from 1999-2003 with Telekom Germany in several tour races, among them the 2002 Giro d’Italia in which he won two stages. In 2004, he moved to Team Gerolsteiner. In 2005, during the Mallorca Tour, it became known that Hondo had tested positive for Carphedon. He was immediately banned from the team, and was then banned for two years for doping abuse. From 2008-14 he rode for several foreign teams.

After his active career, Hondo moved to Switzerland and became chief national coach in 2014. In 2019, he admitted blood doping during his career since 2011 and was consequently fired by the Swiss Cycling Federation.
