In 1946 cyclist Nils Johansson became the Swedish road race champion and won the national six-day race. One year later Johansson won the two-day race around Lake Mälaren and had victories in team and relay races across Sweden. His consistent performances earned him a place on the Olympic team for the 1948 London Games, where he finished fifth in both the individual and team road races. In the road race Johansson and two Dutch riders, Gerrit Voorting and Henk Faanhof, dropped the peloton on the second lap, but Johansson suffered a puncture on the ninth lap and was caught. He continued to challenge for a medal, but finished just under four seconds behind the race winner.
