Biography

Robert Power started as a schoolboy cyclist for Cidona Carrick Wheelers and in 1987 won the All-Ireland Schoolboy Cycling Championship. He later won Irish titles as a junior in 1988 and a senior in 1993. At the 1992 Olympics, Power competed in the team time trial. Scheduled to compete in the individual road race at Barcelona, the day after the time trial he fell while training, and broke his collar bone, taking him out of that race. Power later became a professional photographer and also fished in competition, one time internationally for Ireland. He was awarded the Cork Examiner Junior Sports Award for cycling in 1989 and at the Tipperary Sports Awards he won the cycling award for both 1990 and 1991. He won many races in Ireland, including the 1989 Harry Reynolds Memorial in Dublin, the 1992 Shay Elliott Memorial in County Wicklow, the 1990 and 1994 Des Hanlon Memorial in County Carlow, the 1994 Bill Hyland Memorial in Clonmel, the 1992 Kiely Cup in Carrick-on-Suir, the 1989 Gorey Three Day in County Wexford, the 1992 John Hearn Memorial Three Day in Carrick-on-Suir, and the 1994 and 1995 Blarney Three Day, in County Cork.
