In 1967 cyclist Alberto Rodríguez finished second overall at the Mil Millas Orientales stage race before winning a stage of the Vuelta del Uruguay a year later. After riding several editions of the race Rodríguez finally won the overall classification of the Vuelta in 1973. One year earlier he competed in both the road race and the team time trial at the München Olympics, finishing 27th in the latter.
