During the 1970s and 1980s Alfred Tonna represented the Mosta cycling club in Malta. In 1972 Tonna was selected to ride in the team time trial at the München Olympics, where he placed 31st with his compatriots. He returned to the Olympics in 1980 for the Moskva Games, competing in both the road race and the team time trial, finishing 20th in the latter.
