Wilfried Trott

Wilfried Trott was a West German road cyclist who participated in the individual road races at the 1972 München and 1976 Montréal Olympics. In München, he finished seventh and in Montréal was 19th. He became world-famous for wearing a helmet developed by his father, Karl-Heinz Trott, long before the wearing of helmets became common practice. Elected Cyclist of the Year in 1972, 1979, and 1980, he participated in the World Amateur Championships in 1969, 1973-75 and 1977-78. In total, Trott had 320 amateur victories.

He never turned professional, and later graduated as a sports teacher, and was a member of the national coaching team from 1989-91. He was later employed by the city administration in his hometown of Radevormwald.
