Lithuanian sportsman Juozas Vilpišauskas started out as a track runner before switching to cycling. In 1923 Vilpišauskas he won the 800 metres at the Lithuanian Championship, in addition to finishing second in both the 400 metres and the 1,500 metres. One year later he was selected to compete as a cyclist at the 1924 Paris Olympics. Vilpišauskas rode approximately 100 kilometres in the individual road race before crashing on a bend, resulting in him being unable to complete the course. One year later he won the Kaunas–Marijampolė–Kaunas road race in addition to setting several national records on the track. In 1949 Vilpišauskas emigrated to Brookyln, New York with his wife and son, finding work with the US Railroad.
