Biography

Roberto “El Flaco” Márquez was a member of the field hockey team of Club Deportivo Ferrocarril General Mitre in Buenos Aires when he was selected for the first national team to represent Argentina in field hockey at the 1948 Olympics. He previously had seven years of experience playing the sport, after originally being involved in football, and was 25 years old at the time of his Olympic appearance.

Márquez was one of top scorers for the Argentine team at the tournament, finishing with two goals; one in a 9-1 loss to India, and the other in a 3-2 win against Spain. The team did not advance past the preliminary round, finishing with a 1-1-1 record and being outscored by a combined total of 5-12.
