Biography

Austrian field hockey player Josef Berger was listed in results as Otto Stritzko, but later it became known that Stritzko did not travel to the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. He was replaced by Berger, who played under Stritzko’s name. The Austrian team finished ninth and last in the tournament losing all matches in the preliminary round scoring just one goal, against Denmark.

Berger was engaged in foreign business and travelled frequently, and maybe lived in South America, in the 1920s. He was described in several newspaper sources as being from South America, though it remained unclear where he exactly settled, but it is known that Berger did return to South America again in 1934.
