Biography

A law student in Amsterdam, Karel Pott joined student rowing club Nereus. Excelling in the skiff, he won that event at the Varsity in 1905 and 1907, and competed internationally, although he was not in sufficient shape to attend the 1908 Olympic rowing events at Henley. After obtaining a PhD, he returned to his native Dutch East Indies in 1909. Upon a return to the Netherlands in 1913, he got back to Nereus to row as well as coach. As a honorary member of the club, he travelled once more to the Indies in 1915, but would not come back as he died of dysentery at the young age of 31.
